History

The Manor Field Schools aspire to develop children’s curiosity through history, enabling pupils to become confident, creative and independent learners, who can explore knowledge and skills throughout a range of time periods.  We believe the study of history encourages the children not only to enjoy learning about the past, but it enables them to have a better understanding of the society in which they live today. It will equip children to ask perceptive questions, think critically and sort evidence. We aim to provide first-hand experiences with role play, class visits, workshops and visiting experts playing an important part in all our topics.   

The history curriculum at Manor Field is sequenced so that it continues to develop children’s chronological understanding of British, local and world history. Each unit of learning engages children through an enquiry question that aims to develop children’s understanding and knowledge about a period of time as well as developing children as historians. 

The teaching of history at Manor Field aims to equip children with the ability to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. To achieve this, children in Key Stage 2 follow a six-step enquiry approach to each historical enquiry so that children acquire the knowledge and skills they need to see and think like historians. Learning is planned so that children develop history skills and processes over time. These principal skills are revisited by children to support them in developing historical perspective.

Our aim is for children at Manor Field to:

  • Bring the past to life using a variety of sources, workshops and visits;
  • Realise how the past can influence and affect our society today;
  • Become history detectives, developing a thirst to acquire knowledge.

Throughout the years, children will gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. They will understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
