Reading

Reading with your child is vital. Research shows that it is the single most important thing you can do to help your child’s education. This includes listening to your child read as well as reading aloud to your child. As you share books, you are helping improve your child’s reading skills and also showing them how important and enjoyable reading is. It’s best to do this in small, frequent chunks. Try to put aside some time for it every day. We ask that your child reads their book from school at least five times every week as this really does make a difference.

At the Manor Field Schools, we try to support your child in choosing books that will spark their interest. We will happily make recommendations for books that might engage your child. Our nearest local library, South Ham Library, is just a few miles down the road. There is a wide range of books available and the library offers activities that you can attend with your child.

When your child is learning to read with us, they will have a book matched to the phonics they are currently learning in school. As they become more confident readers, they will be able to choose a book from the library. At the infant school, children also choose a book for the love of reading, which is designed to be shared with family at home and not one that they can read independently.
